Applesauce Cake
If there's one thing you make this fall, it MUST be this Applesauce Cake! Simple to make and perfectly spiced, this old-fashioned autumn family favorite cake is ideal for the apple picking season. The applesauce is delicious by itself for pork chops and poultry dishes.
Ingredients
Cake Ingredients
- 1 packet of Mrs. Wages Spiced Apple Mix
- 2 cups of all purpose flour
- 1 cup of brown sugar
- 8-10 peeled and cored apples, Jonagold or Gala preferred
- 1 1/2 cups of cooled, homemade apple sauce (follow Mrs. Wages package instructions for the applesauce recipe)
- 1/2 cup of softened butter
- 2 large eggs
- 1 1/2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon
- 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking soda
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 1/4 teaspoon of allspice
- 1/4 teaspoon of ground ginger
- 3/4 cup of raisins, optional
- 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts, optional
- 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts for garnish
Frosting Ingredients
- 4 ounces of unsalted softened butter
- 4 ounces of room temperature cream cheese
- 2 cups of powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

- Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 13×9 inch baking pan. Set aside.
- Combine all cake ingredients except raisins and walnuts, if using them, in a bowl. Beat at low speed, scraping bowl sides, until smooth. Stir in walnuts and raisins, if desired.
- Pour mixture into the prepared pan. Bake at 35-40 minutes or until cake center is firm to touch and a toothpick inserted into the center emerges clean. Cool completely before frosting and garnishing with chopped walnuts.
Frosting Instructions
- In a large bowl, beat together the butter and cream cheese with an electric mixer.
- On low speed, add the powdered sugar gradually until smooth and creamy.
- Beat in the vanilla extract.
